About five years ago I started researching my family history. My parents had shared some old family photos and journals with me from their great grandparents and it sparked something in me. When I was younger, I couldn’t care less about anything related to my ancestors but as I grew my own family things changed. As I learned unique stories about my grandparents, I started having huge regrets about not getting to know them better before they passed away. I would give a lot to have the opportunity to sit down with them one more time to learn more about their way of life, what foods they liked, and some of their unique traits that I may have inherited. My regrets have motivated me to learn as much as I can about my ancestry through my DNA.
Because of my love for family history, I was excited for the opportunity to collaborate with 23andMe. You may have heard of them before, they use DNA analysis to help you explore what your 23 pairs of chromosomes say about you. On the Ancestry Composition report (image below), I was able to see which regions around the world my ancestors came from. I was surprised to learn that over half of my ancestors were French and German. I was guessing that it was going to be overwhelmingly Irish because of my reddish hair color.
With 23andMe, you have the option of choosing between their Ancestry Service or their Health + Ancestry Service. The process for having your DNA analyzed by 23andMe was painless. NO NEEDLES!!! You don’t have to submit any blood samples. Since I have a fear of needles this was a huge bonus. You simply provide a saliva sample! When you order a kit, it comes with a saliva collection tube where you spit a small sample of your saliva. Once you’ve finished the saliva collection you simply seal it up, register your kit online at 23andMe.com, and then ship the saliva sample back to 23andMe’s lab with the prepaid return-shipping package. It’s crazy simple; I literally finished mine 20 minutes before my family and I were heading out the door to a party.
One of my goals this year is better health through better sleep. Through 23andMe’s Wellness reports, I was able to learn that I’m likely to move more than average during sleep and that I am not likely to be an especially deep sleeper. I had no idea that this was the case and it’s helped me to be more conscious of my caffeine consumption before and after dinner. The wellness and traits reports also give you interesting insights about your muscle composition, caffeine consumption, saturated fat and weight, sense of taste and smell, or likelihood for early male hair loss.
This post was sponsored by 23andMe, but I want to be clear that all these thoughts are my own and I can honestly say that I have no complaints about my experience. Nikki is considering participating in 23andMe’s service to find out more about her DNA story as well.
