Some of my favorite photos I took last year were the ones of Wil flying. I started shooting a few of these in September and October but dropped off as work and other distractions diverted my attention. These photos of Wil flying have taken on a special meaning for me as I think about the unique challenges Wil is going to face growing up.
I hope to teach him that even though he has Down syndrome he can do anything he puts his mind to. I look forward to a few personal photo projects in 2015 but I am definitely looking forward to doing more of these.

Hi Alan,
I recently saw your beautiful son on the evening news and immediately felt the need to reach out to you. I am a career coach for an international program called Project SEARCH. This is a 9 month, school to work, transitional program for individuals with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. We focus on the “Abilities” rather than the “Disabilities” of each of our students. Now I know that this information is rather premature, given Wil’s young age but I don’t think this information is too soon for you or your wife to be made aware of. Look it up online, it is an amazing program which began at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio and is now in almost 400 locations and in 4 countries. There is a beautiful world, with opportunities that await Wil. One that will embrace his gifts and help him to reach his potential and become a successful, productive member of society. He will change your lives in ways that you cannot imagine today, but you will be fulfilled by, in the future.
I have spent a lifetime working in a health profession that was fulfilling but unrelated to those living with the challenges of having a disability such as Wil’s. It wasn’t until the last few years, that I was blessed with working with young adults who teach me, what it means to rise above. In the Project SEARCH program, these young individuals work harder than you can imagine, against odds bestowed upon them from birth, to succeed, to become more, to show the world that they have something to offer. I am a coach…who learns from her students every day…and my heart is full, proud and hopeful for their future. They are a gift to us all, if we’re open to receive it. Thank you for sharing Wil’s story with us all.
Best wishes to you and your beautiful and gifted family.
Harriet
