It’s been a little while since I’ve told the story about when Wil started flying. Some of you have been asking so enjoy!
When Wil was born our doctor informed us that he had Down Syndrome. We didn’t quite know what to expect. Some books and online articles told us not to accept much for Wil, but we chose not to believe them. Some people felt sorry for us because he had “special needs,” but we all have our own “special needs”.
Shortly before Wil’s first birthday, he learned to roll onto his stomach. Once on his stomach he would flap his arms and wiggle his legs like he was trying to fly. He was so determined to fly and we joked that one day he would take off right before our eyes. Then one day it happened. I was going to check on Wil during his nap and was shocked to see that he was no longer in his crib. I called for my wife and we frantically searched his room. Our search quickly ended as the sound of laughter filled the room. As my wife and I poked our heads out the open window in Wil’s room, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Wil was flying! He was chasing his four siblings around the yard in the most beautiful game of tag I had ever witnessed.
Wil has changed our lives for the better. He is not a burden to our family, he is not a trial for our family, he is just amazing. It’s hard to describe the joy he brings to each one of us. Even though Wil has Down Syndrome, we know that Wil is going to do anything he puts his mind to – Wil Can Fly.
